With hundreds of acres of Forever Wild forest preserve, the Catskills has miles of public trails to explore. In the Great Northern Catskills alone, there are 705,500 acres of wilderness! In summer months, much of this land is accessible to hikers. In the winter, strap on your snowshoes and hit the very same trails. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers can both enjoy the 26-mile Catskills Scenic Trail. Running from Bloomville to Grand Gorge, the mostly flat trail provides a mellow experience for beginners or those just looking to enjoy being outdoors. Swish and glide as you enjoy breathtaking views of the Catskills rolling farmland. Many of these trails are pet friendly – just keep your dog on a leash to help avoid potnetial peril for other skiiers!

Nordic Cross Country Ski Centers

If you’re looking to learn how to cross country ski or snowshoe, or want to refine your form on groomed trails, visit a Catskills ski and snowshoe center. The varied selection of trails at the Mountain Trails Cross Country Ski Center in Tannersville is perfect for families and adults alike. More seasoned skiers will enjoy the trails at Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville. Offering over 25 km of groomed cross country ski and snowshoe dual-purpose trails and 10 km of track-set trails, it’s the perfect opportunity to hone your skill. In addition to downhill skiing and snowboarding, Windham also offers opportunities for competitive Nordic skiers and snowshoers to complete training. Their Nordic Center also offers beginer-level lessons in orienteering and winter biathlon.
